Why is a Salem fence harder to build?
Grade and trees. Many lots near Lake Keowee and Lake Jocassee are steep and wooded, so most of the work is holding a straight, even line over uneven ground and through roots.
Rock, clay and roots slow the auger, and a stretch too steep for a truck means carrying posts and concrete in by hand. Both add to the price. Tick the slope box in the estimator on the quote page and the range widens for a sloped, rocky or rooty line.
Racked or stepped: which fits a slope?
Racked when you want the fence to hug the ground, stepped when the fence is made of level boards or panels. A racked fence leans with the grade; a stepped one stays level and drops at each post.
- Aluminum racks to follow the ground and keeps the lake view open. Four-foot aluminum fence runs about $30–42 a foot.
- Chain link follows the grade too, at about $13–19 a foot for 4 ft galvanized.
- Wood privacy is stepped. Each step leaves a triangle of open space under the low end of the section, which matters if a small dog is the reason for the fence. Six-foot wood privacy runs about $22–34 a foot.
- Board fence is stepped as well, which suits a sloping pasture or the edge of a drive.
Can a fence run down to the lake?
Check before you plan on it. Oconee’s Sec. 38-11.1 keeps a 25-ft natural vegetative buffer from full pond on lakefront lots in the Keowee and Jocassee overlay, and Duke Energy doesn’t approve fences inside its Keowee Project Boundary.
Whether a fence line may cross the buffer is a question for Oconee County Planning & Zoning (864-638-4218), and it is worth asking before anyone clears a path for posts. Across the water in Pickens County, Sec. 410 sets a 50-ft setback from full pool with no impervious surface. Fences on Lake Keowee has Duke’s rules in full, including the one exception for livestock watering.
Is a deer fence worth it here?
Around a garden, it can be. Oconee’s 2024 deer harvest was 5.2 per square mile, below the 8.7 statewide (SCDNR). That is a harvest count, not a deer census, so what visits your yard is the better guide.
On a steep wooded lot, fencing the whole property means long runs through trees and over grade. A fenced garden or orchard plot is a shorter, simpler job. Height is the main decision, and it depends on what is getting in, so tell us what you have seen. Woven wire on wood posts runs about $5–10 a foot at 4 ft, and a taller fence costs more. Farm fence covers woven wire.
Who sets the rules inside Salem?
The town, inside its limits. We haven’t verified the Town of Salem’s fence rules, so ask the town, or Oconee County Planning & Zoning at 864-638-4218, before the posts go in.
Outside town limits, Oconee County lets a fence stand in any setback as long as it stays on your property, and the lakefront overlay still applies. Fence permits in Oconee County explains which office covers which kind of land.
