What fence suits land around Westminster?
It depends on what you are keeping in, and where the fence is seen from. Woven wire for livestock, board fence along the road or a drive, and chain link for a dog yard near the house.
| Fence | Height | Installed price | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Woven wire (field fence) | 4 ft | $5–10 a foot | Pasture and long back lines |
| Board, 3 or 4 board | 4 to 5 ft | $12–22 a foot | Road frontage, paddocks, a drive |
| Galvanized chain link | 4 ft | $13–19 a foot | Dog yards and gardens |
Farm fence covers woven wire and board fence in more detail, including gates.
What does a long run cost?
Length sets most of it. On open, level ground with no old fence to remove, the estimator puts these runs at:
- 1,000 ft of woven wire with one drive gate: $5,400–$10,750
- 600 ft of board fence with one drive gate: $7,600–$13,950
- 200 ft of chain link dog yard with one walk gate: $2,800–$4,200
Rolling ground, rock and roots add to those figures, and so does a line a truck can’t reach, where material is carried in by hand. The fence cost guide shows how each of those changes the price.
How do you fence rolling ground?
Wire follows it and boards step down it. Woven wire runs over rises and dips between posts, while board fence is usually stepped, each section level and dropping at the post.
On a long run, measure along the ground you will actually fence, not off a map. Every rise and dip adds length that an aerial view leaves out. How to measure for a fence walks through it.
Every post on the line counts as digging under South Carolina’s dig law, driven posts included. As amended effective May 22, 2026, the law lists augering, driving and staking as excavation, and we file the SC811 locate before any of it starts.
Does county zoning reach rural land?
Not in the Control Free District. Oconee County exempts that district from zoning, though overlay districts still apply, so check your parcel with Planning & Zoning at 864-638-4218.
Where county zoning does apply, Sec. 38-9.3(2) lets a fence stand in any setback as long as it stays on the property, and the 25-ft sight triangles at corners and driveways stay clear of anything between 2.5 and 8 ft high. Inside Westminster’s town limits, the town’s rules apply instead. We couldn’t verify them, so ask the town before the layout is final. Fence permits in Oconee County sets out who to ask where.
What about land toward the Chattooga?
Find your boundary before you fence it. West of town the land runs toward the Chattooga, a Wild and Scenic River since 1974 that runs along the Oconee and Rabun county line.
A line through woods is harder to sight than one along a road, and a long line is unforgiving: a small angle off at the first corner grows with every hundred feet. If the corner pins are lost, a survey settles it. National cost guides put a boundary survey at roughly $200 to $1,000, which is little next to moving a quarter mile of fence. We walk the finished line with you so you can see it runs where it should.
